This basic hydraulics course will teach pipe sizing using the velocity limit technique. This sets the speed limit of water in PVC pipes at 5 feet per second. This serves a majority of irrigation system designs very well. But there are many common situations where a 5 fps velocity limit is too high and can accellerate piping system failuers and other hydraulic problems. This discussion takes the irrigation designer through the cause and effect of the velocity of the water in the pipe and valve sizing in terms of the cyclical forces that affect the operational costs and sprinkler performance.
