Irrigation System Design Approaches to Minimize Surge Pressure

This basic hydraulics course will teach pipe sizing using the velocity limit technique. This sets the speed limit of water in PVC pipes at 5 feet per second. This serves a majority of irrigation system designs very well. But there are many common situations where a 5 fps velocity limit is too high and can accellerate piping system failuers and other hydraulic problems. This discussion takes the irrigation designer through the cause and effect of the velocity of the water in the pipe and valve sizing in terms of the cyclical forces that affect the operational costs and sprinkler performance. It Works on Paper: Reconciling Site Hydraulics

The primary focus of an irrigation designer is to design a system able to match the water requirement of the plant material through maturity. Ultimately, the hydraulic requirements of this system must match the hydraulic profile of the site, and it is the designer’s and installer’s task to ensure that this occurs. Learn how to ascertain the hydraulic requirements of the system from the irrigation design and gain an understanding of how to calculate this for design-build situations. Take away a game-changing technique used to accurately measure landscapes of any shape so they may be verified against the design.

ITRC: Distribution Uniformity & Precipitation Rate

Intermediate | Landscape (1.5 CEUs)

Online course from the Irrigation Training & Research Center.

Two of the most important concepts in landscape irrigation are distribution uniformity and precipitation rate. DU refers to how evenly water is applied to a landscape. DU is used to measure the performance of an existing irrigation system and is determined through a catch can test. Precipitation rate identifies the rate at which irrigation water reaches the ground surface, and is affected by sprinkler flow rate and area of coverage. PR is an important value that is used in both system design and irrigation scheduling. This class does not qualify for TCEQ. This class does count for 1.5 New Jersey CECs/WC and 1.5 North Carolina CEs.
