Irrigation System Design Approaches to Minimize Surge Pressure

This basic hydraulics course will teach pipe sizing using the velocity limit technique. This sets the speed limit of water in PVC pipes at 5 feet per second. This serves a majority of irrigation system designs very well. But there are many common situations where a 5 fps velocity limit is too high and can accellerate piping system failuers and other hydraulic problems. This discussion takes the irrigation designer through the cause and effect of the velocity of the water in the pipe and valve sizing in terms of the cyclical forces that affect the operational costs and sprinkler performance. Irrigation Technology & the Future of Farming

In the middle of the 20th century, forward thinkers envisioned flying cars, a dream that hasn’t happened yet. They seldom addressed what farming would look like years down the road. When considering the future of farming, you probably think about self-driving tractors, but you’re thinking shouldn’t stop there. Fully autonomous pivots and completely connected crop management are closer than you realize. The goal of agriculture — and especially irrigation — is to produce greater yields with fewer inputs. But what does that mean? For starters, it means less water, lower energy bills and decreased labor costs, not to mention an improved quality of life. As machines located in fields for decades, center pivots are uniquely positioned to become data hubs and drive a revolution in artificial intelligence and machine learning to take data from reactive to predictive.

Irrigation Technology Management & Scheduling

Advances for effective irrigation management are increasingly enabled by unattended data acquisition using Internet of Things approaches. These approaches combine advanced sensors and wireless data transmission to automatically and transparently convey field data to the internet. Users, either human or machine, then can access and act upon the data from nearly anywhere in the world. Particularly in the case of machines automatically acting on the data, robustness, reliability and accuracy of data are crucial to preventing unintended outcomes of machine operations and continued supply of key services. Low cost, low power and solar-powered systems are important to enable market entry of advanced decision support systems based on IoT data acquisition approaches. This presentation will focus on emerging IoT sensor technologies and their use in a decision support system for variable rate center pivot irrigation to improve crop water productivity.

It Works on Paper: Reconciling Site Hydraulics

The primary focus of an irrigation designer is to design a system able to match the water requirement of the plant material through maturity. Ultimately, the hydraulic requirements of this system must match the hydraulic profile of the site, and it is the designer’s and installer’s task to ensure that this occurs. Learn how to ascertain the hydraulic requirements of the system from the irrigation design and gain an understanding of how to calculate this for design-build situations. Take away a game-changing technique used to accurately measure landscapes of any shape so they may be verified against the design.

Intermediate | Landscape (1.5 CEUs)

Online course from the Irrigation Training & Research Center.

Two of the most important concepts in landscape irrigation are distribution uniformity and precipitation rate. DU refers to how evenly water is applied to a landscape. DU is used to measure the performance of an existing irrigation system and is determined through a catch can test. Precipitation rate identifies the rate at which irrigation water reaches the ground surface, and is affected by sprinkler flow rate and area of coverage. PR is an important value that is used in both system design and irrigation scheduling. This class does not qualify for TCEQ. This class does count for 1.5 New Jersey CECs/WC and 1.5 North Carolina CEs.

Managing Nebraska’s Irrigation Water Use in the Cloud

The Twin Platte Natural Resources District manages the use of groundwater for irrigation of approximately 320,000 acres in central Nebraska. They have embarked on an ambitious water data project that will leverage multiple cloud-based platforms and a state-of-the-art data communication network, collecting data on water use and water levels and evaluating water use and water supply automatically. Water managers will automatically receive updates on the status of water supplies and water uses, allowing for real-time water management decisions that historically took years to make and implement. For the first time both the irrigators and water managers in the TPNRD will have their finger on the pulse of the aquifer, being able to continuously monitor and adjust based on current data and information, marking a true paradigm shift from reactive to proactive water management.

Multiple Methods of Irrigation Installation

Irrigation installation job sites are becoming more and more complex. Underground rights-of-way are congested with underground utilities, and yards are increasingly populated with potential landscape, hardscape or environmental hazards. One installation method that contractors are turning to is vacuum excavation. As a low impact and flexible option, vacuum excavators are becoming increasingly popular in urban job sites. When pairing vacuum excavation with traditional installation methods like trenching and excavating, contractors can take on more jobs and increase profitability. Vacuum excavation and traditional installation methods complement each other and should be mutually beneficial. Vacuum excavators are not there to replace trenchers and excavators but to supplement where traditional methods can’t go.
